Category:Alumni of the University of SussexJames Comey "created the environment" for Hillary Clinton's win in 2016, as Democrats are not as politically divided as they were in 2008, former acting FBI director Matthew Miller said.
"I think the biggest shift between 2008 and 2016 was the Comey letter," Miller said on Fox News Sunday. "2008 was a political party where everyone was supporting their candidate and coming together. Now we’re a political party where everyone is attacking their candidate."
Comey sent a letter to Congress on Oct. 28, 2016, saying the FBI was looking into new emails discovered on a computer belonging to Anthony Weiner, the estranged husband of Clinton's top aide Huma Abedin. Weiner was under investigation for sending child pornography to a 15-year-old girl. Weiner was caught up in a separate sexting scandal. The FBI had reopened its investigation into Clinton after the discovery of classified information on her server.
Comey, who was leading the FBI, did not recommend that Clinton face charges. But many Democrats -- and former President Obama -- felt he created a media frenzy that contributed to Clinton's loss.
"He absolutely helped create the environment that created the conditions for Donald Trump to be president," Miller said.
